I have always been fascinated by the idea of a land where there are vast, endless tracts of snow and one day just before the onset of the long Antarctic winter I found myself disembarking from a zodiac to stand surrounded by penguins on the peninsula itself. It was a huge privilege to briefly inhabit a world where, but for modern technology, humans couldn’t hope to survive. I have tried to convey how it felt to experience this limitless world with only the sound of the wind, the penguins’ cries and the cracking ice to break the silence.
