The Adelie penguins ‘true birds of the sea ice’ live further south, in the coldest Antarctic conditions, than any other species of penguin. Over the past 30 years as temperatures have risen causing sea ice to melt, they have steadily been migrating southwards.

Adelies are therefore being regarded as a major indicator of climate change.
