Calving is the term used when chunks of ice break off from the edge of the ice mass. This is occurring with greater frequency as global temperatures rise. In a recent study it was found that Antarctica is now losing six times more ice than it was in the 1980s. Since 1979 global sea levels have risen by 14 millimetres.
