This painting developed from some sketches done while sitting among the ruins of Melrose Abbey. It was built in 1146 and was the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland. The founding monks came from Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire. The Cistercian way of life was ascetic and arduous but also tranquil: “Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity, and a marvellous freedom from the tumult of the world.” Aelred, Abbot of Rievaulx from 1147-1167
